I want to share with you an important photo composition rule.

Taking a photograph with an arrangement less severe than symmetry calls for asymmetry. Asymmetry appears lively, harmonious and casual. A form of balanced asymmetry used in photographic composition is the principle of the golden section. The important picture element, the center of interest, is placed at the golden section.

The golden ratio is 1/1.618. A set of nesting golden rectangles based on the golden ratio creates a logarithmic golden spiral.

At least since the Renaissance, many artists and architects have proportioned their works to approximate the golden ratio believing this proportion to be aesthetically pleasing and harmonious.

The golden ratio is often called the golden section or golden mean. Other names include extreme and mean ratio, medial section, divine proportion, divine section, golden proportion, golden cut, golden number and mean of Phidias.

The golden ratio is seen in nature, in the arrangement of branches along the stems of plants and of veins in leaves, the skeletons of animals and the branchings of their veins and nerves, and the proportions of chemical compounds and the geometry of crystals.


Let's look at two examples where the concept is applied:

"Children on Galata Bridge" - Important elements are placed at the intersection points and lines forming the golden ratio.

"Trams in Beyoglu" - The trams, which are the main subjects, are located in the golden section.

I have added the photographs from the "Third Eye" series in the galleries since glossy metal prints are now available at the series' required sizes.

I am always in a state of exploring. It could be pyhsical exploration such as traveling and flying or it could be exploring new ideas and techniques like I have done with this series. The series consist of side by side images that look similar but are actually different. When one looks at them with the help of a stereo viewer, the brain combines the two images and a new 3D image with new colors appears.

I have created the images to hold on their own but if you want to see the combined 3D image you can easily get a stereo viewer like the one here.

“Shades of Salda” is now part of the “Untamed” series. Limited edition fine art metal prints available at www.alikabasartist.com/untamed. This photograph is my take on Lake Salda. The unique crater lake in southwestern Turkey has been the center of controversy lately regarding its protection status. I hope the area stays in its natural state without being further trampled by people.

Lake Salda is a mid-size crater lake in southwestern Turkey. It’s unique due to the hydromagnesite mineral found in its coastal waters. It has been in the news frequently regarding its protection status. I have decided to include it in my “Untamed” series. I visited the lake with my sculptor friend Kemal Tufan and shot it from the air by flying in my paramotor. The high altitude made our taking off and flying difficult. The photograph is coming soon...
